the new adventure

I got to go on two bike rides today . First I went to earth fare and had a cup of coffee and a cashew birds nest it was great and warmed me for a ride back home. I was thinking about the days getting longer and life returning to this great earth . When I spotted a pink Camila blooming my heart warmed greatly! I did not get a picture though, but i did find a fat magnolia bud to photograph
Came home had the traditional black-eyed peas ,hog jowl, collard greens and cornbread. Felt so good went out for a sunset ride seen the ominous front moving in
Eating a bit and going to bed early in case i have to remove snow

new year already

I did not do much blogging in 2007 because i was busy having a great year . I went on my bike trip had a blast and made memory's that will last a lifetime I remember stepping off the porch saying to myself , "I will pay the house gods up on my return " as I said good buy to a crumbling house .
I made good on that promise and have been making repairs . I hope that does not stop in 08
I also hope to divide my time between my house and my adventures lets go start the adventures of 2008

I was spreading mulch on Biltmore Ave. On Thursday when a few snow flakes paid me a visit . You could tell by the way they danced around that they were "scouts" preparing for an invasion. They invaded last night. We got up too about three inches of white fluffy stuff I just raised up in bed arranged the pillows so I could sit up comfortably and just watched out the French doors as the snow continued to fall. Finally I got up and made me a cup of tea while my bath water was drawn. What a easy Sunday morning. By the time I had enough wrinkles to get out of the tub the sun was coming out and I could see the asphalt on the roads so I got dressed for a bike ride .It did not take long to realize what a great ride this would be .Although I had planned to just ride around the block the beauty of the fresh snow and relative warmth around 35 degrees convinced me to travel further. I ended up at earth fair got me and sherri some ground beef patty's with Swiss cheese and mushrooms already added and a small loaf of French bread I already have some sweet potatoes to cook with it. With supper shopping finished i headed out the door in the brief few minutes that i was in the store the clouds had invaded and it was snowing hard! Words are hard to find to describe how nice it was though the hushed silence that only snow brings, less cars, the smell of snow and less cars priceless. I zig zagged all through west Asheville enjoying every minute of the ride. Houses, trees, gardens everything seemed so new an begging to be explored but i relented and came home. The thought of supper i have cooking now does make me feel somewhat better about coming home

Some days do not go as planned that is what makes them great! I was to get up at 4:30 this morning and ride out the door to mount Pisgah but Sherri turned the alarm off at first ring. So we slept in till 7:00am plans are changing. I take decide to take Sherri to work but since I am no hurry so we stop by west Asheville bakery for fresh coffee while waiting in line they bring out steaming fresh Danishes must have it the perfect fast breakfast. After I drop Sherri off I ride up town then up town mountain road to the parkway it was closed so I turn around and head down mountain head to the house. As I was enjoying the wonderful morning light the way it washed the downtown area on the way down was very Thomas Kincaid. I must see more mountains so I head home to get the bike. After loading it on the car I head too the arboretum. After unloading the bike and packing with today's necessities I head up the mountain. Even though the parkway was closed the first part of the mountain was busy. I went past several logging operations. Today was front of tunnel day they were clearing over hanging limbs. All the way up the parkway ever hundred yards or so there would be a stack of wood from one tree some times two. I wonder what they do with do they leave it and let the first up the mountain when it opens get it? Or do they gather and sell at the campgrounds in the summer.
I did get the dickens scared out of me once when a grouse drummed off ten feet beside me. Other wise just a nice ride I was in shorts half way up, but it was getting cool on the top, then layered on every thing I had with me for the windy ride back down. I had my camp stove with me so I did get to stop a few times for hot tea. Also had a bowl of cereal and on top I had a can of pears a piece of dark chocolate I had brought at earth fair last night it was good but dam! it is hard to break into bite size pieces! The "leatherman" chisel comes through once again.

We went to max patch today an awesome ride

All the mountaintops were covered in this ice they were covered in snow. For the most part the roads were too but not the slick kind.
They had scraped the gravel roads where there was about one inch of snow left on them. Then it looked like pretty heavy traffic
Had packed the snow into a very drivable surface. Much better than the south sides of the mountains, they were the slickest of mud. The mud covered
The car.
This was the first time I have been to max patch after hearing about it all of my life. It lived up to all expectations! A snow covered mountaintop no trees just fields for miles. At the top you could see a group of about twenty people sledding .A good looking sled run about three hundred yards long .I wish I had brought a sled I wish even more I had a sled like we seen on top of a Subaru. An old fashioned one with metal blades that you liked to keep waxed and steered with a cross bar on the front. One of those and a cup of hot chocolate when you get to the bottom would be good living.
We walked a couple hundred yards up a trail around the top of the mountain examining the ice formations closer. One side of all the branches had about one inch of a cross between ice and snow. We even tasted some me proclaiming, “They taste like the latest flavor of dipping dots”.
Snow also covered the ground. Drifts were about a twelve inches deep but you could still see tuffs of grass coming out of the field. A very tasty powder also.
We will have to pay this place a visit again, soon I hope.
We leave winding our way through alternating snow then mud covered dirt roads. Coming out in Del Rio Tennessee. We stop at a country store for fresh snacks and then we head home. What a ride what a mighty fine ride.

I made it back from my bike trip Asheville to Beaufort or from A to B. It was a great trip testing my mind body and spirit. Scary and fun at the same time a lot like a roller coaster. But even before one adventure is done laying of dream eggs has begun one recurring dream is to follow this little creek behind my house to new orleans
